Posted: 07 Jan 2007 I have just tried searching out my notes kept the last two years as to the dates that a localish pond started filling up with toads,but cannot fing the notes. I love being there on those first few nights with a torch, and watching the toads turn up from the surrounding fields and woodlands. Does anybody have any dates of the start of migrations to their local ponds the last few years? I really dont want to miss this years spectacle. cheers Morg love punk-hate racism |

Posted: 07 Jan 2007 I have seen the same thing in Yorkshire. I used to go badger watching in some woods and to get to them had to cross some fields and go past two large ponds. The ponds were always thick with breeding frogs and toads but it was the toads I saw. To get to the ponds from the woods they had to cross a field and go through a section of stone wall. It was quite something in the fading light to see the wall seemingly alive with hundreds and hundreds of toads as they crept through it to go the last 20 yards to the first pond. As I visited Yorkshire at Easter that would be when I saw them but of course it falls on different dates. Suz |

Hi MORG Here are some dates for Essex - Migration dates around 12th to 21st March at several sites - central parts of the county. Dependant on the winter weather before the migration can last from a few days to a few weeks and in some cases over a month. It would be good if you have made notes of how many of the toads you have seen in the pond. There is a Toad survey project in development at the moment and it would be good to have local contacts who can provide population counts from breeding ponds. I have been undertaking surveys in Writtle, Essex where we have had over 1000 toads within the breeding ponds we were looking at - so if you would like to help with a toad census in 2007 please pm me
